A privacy filter (also known as a privacy screen or screen cover) is a physical attachment for laptop, monitor or tablet screens that prevents unauthorised people from viewing the screen from the side. The display is then clearly visible only when viewed directly from the front – from side angles, the screen appears dark or black.
Why do you need a privacy screen?
Privacy filters protect against so-called visual data leaks. Particularly in public or semi-public areas (e.g. on trains, at conferences or in open-plan offices), there is a risk that confidential information could be viewed simply by someone looking over your shoulder.
Where do I encounter this in everyday SME life?
Field work and remote working (e.g. on the train, in a co-working space)
Reception area in a law firm or doctor’s surgery (e.g. patient details on screen)
Open-plan offices with a lot of footfall or visitors
What are the benefits of a privacy screen?
Protects personal and confidential data
Easy to retrofit, without the need for IT intervention
Enhances awareness of data protection and security within the organisation
A privacy screen is a simple yet effective way to visibly and practically ensure data protection in the workplace.
