The term is made up of the English “key”, here for “key” and “logger” for “record, log”. Keyloggers are hardware or software that log inputs from a keyboard. This allows cybercriminals to identify passwords and PIN numbers, for example, and then misuse them. Keyloggers are classified as malicious programs (malware) and are assigned to the subcategory Spyware .

Keyloggers are also available for purchase for businesses and private consumers. According to German law (Criminal Code § 202a, spying on data), keyloggers may only be used with the knowledge of the user(s). For example, in companies, the works council must agree to the use of keyloggers.
You may encounter it whenever you use your keyboard to type – even on business trips.
