Gateway

A gateway is a transition point between two networks via which data is forwarded from one network to another.

What does gateway mean in detail?

A gateway connects different networks with each other, for example the internal company network with the Internet. It ensures that data reaches the right destination and can be exchanged between different systems.

A gateway often also takes on additional tasks, for example:

  • Inspection of data traffic
  • Forwarding of requests
  • Implementation of safety rules

In many cases, a company’s router is such a gateway.

Where do I come across this issue in my day-to-day work?

  • When accessing the Internet in the company
  • When sending and receiving e-mails
  • When using cloud services

Practical example:
You open a website in the browser. Your request is first routed to the Internet via your company’s gateway. The gateway may check whether the connection is permitted before the page is loaded.

What can I do to improve my safety?

  1. Only use approved networks and devices
  2. Take warning messages or blocked pages seriously
  3. Report unusual behavior (e.g. suddenly blocked access)

Note: The gateway is an important control point – it helps to protect your company network from unwanted access.
