Sandbox

The term ‘sandbox’ refers to a separate, isolated area within a system. Actions or programmes executed in this sandbox remain confined to this area and do not affect the overall system.

What does this mean in detail?

  • In IT, a sandbox is used as a test area for new programmes. This allows them to be checked for functionality, errors or malfunctions without damaging the system.
  • Sandbox technology is also used as a security measure for programmes that are frequently exposed to attacks, such as Internet browsers. This prevents these attacks from spreading to the entire system.
  • Some virus scanners offer a sandbox in which files from unsafe sources can be opened.
  • Sandboxes can even be used for entire operating systems – you can use them to simulate a virtual computer. Windows 10 Pro, for example, offers this option with the ‘Windows Sandbox’.
  • Sandbox technologies are currently being used more and more to increase cyber security. In response, cybercriminals are stepping up their efforts to circumvent these technologies. Therefore, you should never assume that sandbox technology provides 100% security.

Where do I encounter this topic in my everyday work?

Every day, if you use the Google Chrome internet browser. It is based entirely on sandbox technology. Other internet browsers use sandboxes in some cases, e.g. for cookies (Mozilla Firefox) or for unknown sites (Windows Defender).

What can I do to improve my security?

  • You can use programmes that increase the security of your computer through sandbox technologies, e.g. the Google Chrome internet browser.
  • You can use programmes that are frequently exposed to external attacks within a sandbox. For example, your email programme.
  • Always combine sandbox technologies with other security measures such as firewalls, employee awareness and virus scanners.
  • It is best to discuss your
  • company’s requirements for suitable sandbox programmes with your IT department or an external IT security service provider such as Perseus.
