Commercial and personal cyber insurance is becoming increasingly sought after in view of the increasing threat of cybercrime. But an insurance policy alone is not enough for sustainable protection. It’s all about the additional benefits of a cyber policy: good emergency management or effective employee awareness training can make all the difference. <\/strong><\/p>

More than 75 percent of German companies have already fallen victim to cybercrime. This is confirmed by current surveys. The cost of damage caused by a cyber attack amounted to 87.7 million euros in Germany alone in 2019. Above all, data loss, business interruptions or claims for damages due to third-party liability claims cause major damage that can quickly threaten the existence of the company. Cyber insurance can help here. <\/p>

Cyber insurance in practice<\/strong><\/p>

While many companies were still quite skeptical about cyber insurance in 2018, cyber policies are now actively in demand. Interest in cyber insurance is growing across industries \u2013 but not among all companies. In many cases, there is still a lot of catching up to do. This can quickly become threatening, because hackers have long since ceased to focus only on large, international corporations. They are also constantly changing their attack pattern and proceeding adaptively and uncompromisingly. <\/p>

“From our point of view, you can’t say that a company more or less fits into the grid of hackers. Whether it’s a small company with ten employees, a medium-sized company or an international corporation, they can all fall victim to a cyberattack.”<\/em><\/p>

Cyber insurance for the self-employed, micro-enterprises and small businesses<\/strong><\/p>

According to a Forsa survey conducted on behalf of the German Insurance Association (GDV), micro-enterprises (up to nine employees) in particular are not yet convinced of the benefits of cyber insurance. In some cases, entrepreneurs have even deliberately decided against cyber insurance. <\/p>

The situation is different for small companies. Almost 70 percent are aware of cyber insurance and 35 percent have taken out or plan to take out one. In view of the current development of cyberattacks, this is still far too little. In 2019, 79 percent of companies with 10 \u2013 99 employees were affected by data loss, espionage or sabotage. In 2015, the figure here was still 47 percent. <\/p>

Cyber insurance for German SMEs<\/strong><\/p>

The situation is similar for German SMEs, the backbone of the German economy. Here, too, most people (over 75 percent) are familiar with the concept of cyber insurance. Almost every second company states that it has a cyber policy or is planning to take out cyber insurance. Unfortunately, there is still the dangerous misconception, especially among smaller medium-sized companies, that they do not fit into the grid of cybercriminals. Above all, the arguments that one’s own company is too small and that company data and information are not interesting for hackers prevent many companies from actively investing in cybersecurity. Here, too, the damage is serious should a successful cyberattack occur. On average, companies are faced with a business interruption of several days. <\/p>

Insurance<\/strong>for large corporations<\/strong><\/p>

Many corporations and large companies are already pursuing a holistic cybersecurity strategy and investing large resources in defending against threats from the Internet. But here, too, the risks of cyberattacks are high. Increasingly complex software, new types of viruses every day, non-transparent supply chains or the numerous daily updates pose challenges even for large companies. In these cases, too, there is no such thing as one hundred percent security. The known residual risk is covered by a cyber policy. <\/p>

The additional benefits for cyber insurance<\/strong><\/p>

But cyber insurance alone is not enough. Only the additional benefits of such insurance offer long-term and sustainable protection against threats from the Internet. This makes it possible to develop cybersecurity concepts that precisely meet the demands and requirements of corporate customers. These include, for example, a detailed security analysis, comprehensive emergency management or comprehensive employee awareness training. The latter in particular is increasing in importance. <\/p>

Humans are the number one gateway for cyberattacks. In 90 percent of cases, thoughtless clicks on links or attachments in emails allow hackers to gain unauthorized access to operating systems, networks, or company data. In order to be able to avoid cyberattacks, employees must be sensitized to risks and threats. Only the interaction of such additional services with the actual cyber insurance allows companies to protect themselves against cyber risks, fend off cyber attacks and ultimately minimize financial damage and data loss. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
