In recent years, the malicious botnet Emotet has consistently topped the rankings of the most dangerous cyber threats. Now the malware, which has been spreading as a Trojan since 2014, has been rendered harmless as part of a concerted action by Europol and the BKA. What does this mean for the current threat situation? Is the risk of cyberattacks now lower? Yes and no, because there are countless other attackers and cybercriminals lurking out there. <\/strong><\/p>\n

As recently as last year, the notorious malware topped the “Global Threat Index 2020<\/a>” as currently the most dangerous malware. Almost 20 percent of all German companies were affected by this in December. A spam campaign infected with Emotet killed another 100,000 users last summer. For example, Emotet had led to a total loss of IT at the Berlin Court of Appeal. The court had to be disconnected from the Berlin state network. The malware had also caused considerable damage to the F\u00fcrth Clinic and the Frankfurt am Main city administration – and also to tens of thousands of private individuals. According to investigators, damage of at least 14.5 million euros was caused in Germany alone. <\/p>\n


<\/strong><\/p>

Door opener for further malware<\/strong><\/p>\n

The perfidious thing about Emotet is that the malware acts as a door opener for further malware. So, not only did it steal data, but it also opened the backdoors for more malware. Formerly used as a banking Trojan, Emotet has recently served more as a spreader of other malware programs or entire campaigns. He used various methods to stay operational and knew evasive techniques to avoid detection. <\/p>\n

“At its core, the ‘Emotet’ infrastructure functioned like a first door opener into computer systems on a global level,” the agency said. “The system was able to infect entire networks in a unique way, just by gaining access to a few devices.” The system was broken into via a Word document, often disguised as a harmless-looking attachment to an e-mail or even as a link, Europol described. <\/p>\n

Once the illegal access was successful, it was sold to cyber criminals. These in turn could infiltrate their own Trojans in order to obtain bank data, resell captured data or extort ransom for blocked data. <\/p>\n


<\/strong><\/p>

BKA: Emotet infrastructure under control and destroyed<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last Wednesday, the activities of the Trojan were over: The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that German investigators and an international group of investigators had succeeded in rendering the criminal software harmless as part of a concerted action. The police authority Europol announced that the global infrastructure on several hundred computers had first been brought under control and then destroyed. The operation lasted more than two years. It was carried out under German and Dutch leadership with investigators from a total of eight countries. The dismantling was carried out together with the law enforcement authorities of the Netherlands, Ukraine, Lithuania, France, Great Britain, Canada and the USA, according to the BKA. <\/p>\n

The investigators had initially identified various servers in Germany with which the malware was distributed, and later others in other European countries. In Germany alone, investigators have seized 17 servers so far. In Ukraine, prosecutors initially took control of the Emotet infrastructure at one of the alleged operators. As a result, according to the press release, “it was possible to make the malware on affected German victim systems unusable for the perpetrators”. This means that where Emotet had already penetrated a system, the malware was moved so that it can no longer cause damage. In addition, it could only communicate with servers that were operated to preserve evidence. <\/p>\n


<\/strong><\/p>

“Malware-as-a-Service”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Emotet was one of the “most dangerous instruments for cyber attacks” in recent years, said a spokeswoman for Europol. Emotet’s criminal business model can be described as “malware-as-a-service”. It has provided the basis for targeted cyber attacks for other criminals. <\/p>\n

“The law enforcement authorities have managed to take over the infrastructure,” says Monika Bubela, Cyber Security Specialist at Perseus, describing the access of the investigating authorities, “this means that the infected computers are now forwarded to the law enforcement authorities and not to the criminals. To put it simply, the criminals have lost access to the infected infrastructure and the further spread of the malware has been prevented. Dutch police have also managed to recover a database of stolen emails, allowing users to check if their emails were affected.”<\/p>\n


<\/strong><\/p>

Has the risk of cyber attacks now become significantly lower as a result?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The significance of this blow against cybercriminals is very great, as Emotet was one of the most active and difficult malware to eliminate and spread easily,” Bubela said, “So Emotet is ‘pacified’ and put on hold at the moment, so it no longer poses a threat.”<\/p>\n

At least for the moment: It is quite possible that Emotet has downloaded further malware into the infected system in time. And they could remain active. The “Trickbot” case has also shown that the shutdown of the infrastructure does not necessarily mean the end of criminal activities: paralyzed in October, the banking Trojan was active again just four weeks later. <\/p>\n


<\/strong><\/p>

Does this mean that Emotet is finally finished?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Also BSI<\/a> President Sch\u00f6nbohm does not yet consider Emotet to be a solved problem. “If you receive information from your provider about an Emotet infection of your systems, please take it seriously,” he said, referring to the assistance of his authority. <\/p>\n

“Clean up your systems! If Emotet has infected your systems, we have to assume that other malware has managed to do the same.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The question is whether the Emotet operators \u2013 assuming they are not imprisoned \u2013 are building a new infrastructure. This rebuilding would at least cost a lot of time \u2013 and money. So this concentrated blow against cybercrime has at least provided a breather. <\/p>\n
