VPN stands for virtual private network. It is a self-contained communication network. This is usually additionally secured by encryption. In this way, the conversations and data of the network participants are protected from criminal intruders. Especially when using a third-party Wi-Fi, such a network can offer protection against possible data access and is therefore an important part of the cybersecurity of mobile working.
Where do I come across this problem in my day-to-day work?
If you work outside the office (e.g. home office or business trip), caution is advised, especially with public Wi-Fi networks and computers. Fraudsters could place themselves between the victim and the device used by means of special software or insufficiently secured applications in order to read or manipulate the communication. This gives them access to the company’s IT and sensitive data. Such incidents are referred to as a man-in-the-middle attack or shadow IT. More information on the latter can be found here.
How can I protect myself?
Beware of open or poorly secured Wi-Fi networks! Turn off the function to automatically connect to open Wi-Fi networks. Instead, use mobile data and surf with your laptop via mobile phone hotspot or via a virtual private network (VPN).
